Volunteering at Delnor-Wiggins has proven to be a rewarding experience for a growing number of people, both young and old. The park is one of the few remaining unspoiled expanses of a true barrier island. It can be a day-long destination or a sunset half hour. A great place for family picnics. It’s also perfect for a leisurely walk to commune with nature. Oh and did we mention the award winning beach? We, the members of the Friends group, hope we can help make everyone’s visit just a little better.
We host the annual Wildlife & Wetlands Art Show attracting top nature artists in the area. We also host the annual Nature Festival geared toward the children in our community. And we are especially excited about a new event, which we hope will be the first of many, The Green Flash, a Sunset Celebration. It will be a dinner party & fund raising event this November. It will be held in conjunction with our neighbors and partners, the Turtle Club and the Moraya Bay Beach Club. Stay tuned for details.
The Friends have performed clean-up after hurricanes, done numerous boardwalk and bathhouse construction projects, removed exotic plants, worked on interpretive projects, funded equipment purchases and provided general support for the park staff. These, and other little things that make the park so much better.
If you are not already a member, I hope you will join us, the Friends of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, and become a member of the volunteer group that improves the park experience for all. Or just come to one of our monthly meetings and kick the tires to see us up close.
