Dellora’s Garden

Years ago, Friends members voted enthusiastically to formally name the Lester and Dellora Norris memorial area, Dellora’s Garden.  This quaint little area is was just north of the walkway to the pavilion in area 5. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during hurricane Ian. We will be rebuilding it in the future, if possible.

The Dellora Garden project included tree trimming to reshape the entrance and a professionally designed and installed paver walkway to enhance the area.  Strategic plantings of various native species were added also.

Seven of our members, under the guidance of our Park Services Specialist, got together to hold a class to research plants native to our area.  Then a truck full of appropriate plants was purchased from All Native Garden Center in Ft. Myers.

Included were porterweed, scarlet sage, coontie and wild coffee plants.  After planting, a watering team was designated to keep the investment alive and well. You can see photos of our gardening adventure here

The latest addition to this project was the construction and installation of a welcoming archway and a rustic bench.  A view from the bench offers a glimpse of the Gulf framed by foliage. Dellora’s Garden is already, a quiet and serene spot.  Park visitors have had their curiosity piqued and are now wandering in to examine the memorial.
